“Rock of Ages” actor Tom Cruise appears on the most recent cover of W Magazine in character as musician Stacee Jaxx. Cruise flaunts serious abs and bad lifestyle choices in the accompanying editorial and talks to W about his interpretation of the rock legend.

“I didn’t want to imitate all these other rock stars,” said Cruise. “He had to be unique. If the audience doesn’t immediately buy into his absolute greatness, there’s no movie journey. Without that, you have nothing. Kate loves musicals. She sings and dances, and we kind of went through the history of musicals together. And Suri loved ‘Hairspray.’ I thought Adam Shankman did a great job directing the movie, so I arranged to meet him and said, ‘Where’s our musical?’ He came back and said, ‘Rock of Ages.’ We went and saw it in L.A., and for me, I didn’t know how to play the character like that. I had to find my own Stacee Jaxx.”

While indie U.S. and world cinema fare battles it out for supremacy in the main competition of the most prestigious film festival on the planet,  the studios are letting us know that they, too, can mix it in the promotional game, sharing footage of their new blockbusters with European press and interested celebs at the Festival de Cannes.

Paramount Pictures and Dreamworks unveiled a clip of their new animated feature “Rise of the Guardians,” and brought out the “Star Trek” franchise’s Chris Pine, the wildly popular Alec Baldwin, and, wife of “The Dictator,” “Wedding Crashers” actress Isla Fisher, to participate in a wildly fun Q&A with the crowd. Bruce Willis, Chris Pine, Eva Longoria, Lana Del Rey (pictured left), Tilda Swinton, Freida Pinto, Eva Herzigova, Jessica Chastain, Diane Kruger, Harvey Weinstein and many, many other gorgeous faces and powerful players in film and fashion graced the red carpet for the opening gala of the 65th Cannes Film Festival.

With an event sponsored by Electrolux in their “Agora” space on the beach, the event is just the kick-off to what will amount to a searing level of celebrity on the French Riviera, with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, and other pretty young things mixing it up on the Palais des Festival’s famous red carpet steps over the next week-and-a-half.

We’re off to an all-star start, and that’s just Day 1!

Just as he did years ago in a giant thong bikini, Sacha Baron Cohen managed to steal our collective breaths away today at Day 1 of the Festival de Cannes on the French Riviera.

No stranger to brazen film campaigning, The Dictator found his way onto yachts, into a Lamborghini, and front and center on the beach while showing off his latest character.

Sometimes it’s good to be the king, yes?

Jennifer Lopez is the most powerful celebrity in the world, according to Forbes. The mag placed Lopez atop its annual Forbes Celebrity List, citing her $52 million in earnings over the last year, clothing line, fragrance, endorsement deals and current gig as an “American Idol” judge.

The rest of the top five should come as no surprise, considering Forbes’ metrics of fame and money. They are, in order, Oprah Winfrey, Justin Bieber, Rihanna and Lady Gaga.

The annual Forbes Celebrity List has been going strong since 1999; it’s worth noting that the mag doesn’t deduct attorney, management and agent fees in its pretax income calculations.

Selena Gomez proves she’s capable of playing far more risque roles than her Disney pedigree would indicate in the June issue of Interview magazine. Gomez appears alongside her “Spring Breakers” costars Ashley Benson, Vaness Hudgens and Rachel Korine for the photo shoot, and dished on her good-girl image in the accompanying interview.

“I was getting kind of repetitive in terms of the roles I was picking, and I really wanted to do something that was completely different,” she explained. “It was a mark thing for me — like, ‘This is what I want to be doing.’ I want to be taking myself seriously as an actress, and this was definitely a stretch. I mean, I’d never smoked a cigarette before in my entire life. It was really funny — they had to show me how to do it.”

The female leads of “What to Expect When You’re Expecting,” Cameron Diaz, Anna Kendrick, Elizabeth Banks and Brooklyn Decker, join forces for an editorial in the latest issue of Redbook.

Oddly enough, out of the five actresses, Jennifer Lopez is the only one with kids in real life. How does she make it work? “My sanctuary is my bathtub,” she admitted. “That’s really the only time I get to myself. It’s usually around 15 or 20 minutes, but for me, those minutes are like heaven on earth. Sometimes I even say a little prayer while I’m in there. I’m like, ‘Lord, help me get through this day!’”

Two new Jennifer Aniston SmartWater ads have been released, showing the actress in the driver’s seat of a car and at an outdoor table. Captions for each ad declare that “good taste travels well” and “simplicity is delicious.”

You might recall the first ad from the campaign, in which Aniston posed topless and nude; in these latest ads, she remains clothed. Celebitchy notes that the campaign leaves something to be desired in the Photoshop department, especially the photo of Aniston in the white button-up shirt.
